Setup guide
From unboxing to your first ride with a heart-rate-controlled fan. Ten steps, no soldering.
Time needed: about 20–30 minutes, plus printing time if you print the housing. You need:
- a supported Xiaomi Smart Fan
- an ESP32-S3 board (Basic or Touch)
- a USB data cable
- a desktop computer with Chrome or Edge
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
- a Xiaomi account (to read the fan token once)
1. Get a supported Xiaomi Smart Fan
Homewind only works with Xiaomi Smart Fans. Supported today:
- Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro
- Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2
- Smartmi Standing Fan 3
- Xiaomi Smart Standing Air Circulation Fan

2. Choose and order an ESP32-S3 board
- Homewind Basic: Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-S3. Cheaper, configured in the browser.
- Homewind Touch: Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.64. Has a touchscreen and shows a QR code for setup.
Shop links for both boards are on the build section of the home page.
3. Print the housing and stand (optional)
Free 3D-print files on MakerWorld: Homewind housing and Homewind stand.
4. Install the firmware in your browser
- Connect the board with a USB data cable (charge-only cables don’t work).
- Open homewind.io in Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer.
- Click Flash Homewind Basic or Flash Homewind Touch, choose Connect and select your ESP32-S3.
- Wait for “Success”, then unplug and reconnect the board.
5. Retrieve your fan token
Homewind needs the fan’s 32-character token. Get it with the Token Extractor (Windows, macOS, Linux, no command line):
- Sign in with your Xiaomi account (password or QR code in the Xiaomi Home app).
- Pick your server region, e.g. DE, or “All regions”.
- Click Fetch devices, find your fan and copy its token.
Treat the token like a password. Don’t post it in forums or issues.
6. Connect Homewind to your Wi-Fi
- Power the board. On your phone or laptop, connect to the Wi-Fi called Homewind-… (the end is unique to your board).
- The setup page usually opens by itself. If not, open
http://192.168.4.1. - Choose your network, enter the password, save.
Homewind uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Fan and board must be on the same network.
7. Open the settings page
- Homewind Touch: open Settings on the display and scan the QR code.
- Homewind Basic: take the Bluetooth name shown in Zwift, Rouvy or your phone’s Bluetooth list and add
.local, e.g.http://homewind-2613cfd0.local. - Alternative: find the board’s IP address in your router and open
http://<IP address>.
8. Add your fan
Under System Settings tap Add Fan, paste the 32-character token and confirm. Homewind connects to the fan within a few seconds. You can add up to four fans.
9. Add Bluetooth sensors and set your heart-rate range
- Wear the heart-rate strap and spin the pedals so the sensors are visible.
- In Setup Sensors search for sensors and add your heart-rate strap. It is required: the fan follows your pulse. Cadence and speed sensors are optional.
- Set your minimum and maximum heart rate. Fan speed follows your pulse within that range.
A new sensor can take up to a minute to connect. After that, Homewind reconnects automatically every ride. In Zwift or Rouvy you pair one device: Homewind. More about the sensor hub.
10. Updates
After the first install you never need the USB cable again. Open the settings page, go to the firmware section and install the update. Wi-Fi, fan tokens and sensors are kept.
Troubleshooting
- Flash button greyed out: use Chrome or Edge on a desktop; Safari and Firefox don’t support Web Serial.
- Board not found when flashing: try another USB cable. Many are charge-only.
- Homewind doesn’t see the fan: check that fan and board are on the same 2.4 GHz network and that the token has exactly 32 characters without spaces.
- Something hangs: unplug the board for a few seconds and plug it back in.
